September is the time to visit Ocean City

Maria Drakos - Wednesday, September 07, 2016

September is a great month to visit Ocean City, MD. Come during the week and have the beach all to yourself. No lines or waits at local restaurants which are all still open because of the special events that happen on the weekends. You can still get your tan on and enjoy cool nights. The ocean is still a balmy 72 degrees and the waves are amazing. Happy hours and deck parties get very competitive for your dollars. Our prices start to fall off their peak season highs. So come on down to the ocean.

Why stay at a bed and breakfast?

Maria Drakos - Monday, June 13, 2016

Why not? Have you experienced everything the world has to offer? Are the big impersonal Hotels your only choice? Shouldn't you try everything? When was the last time a chain Hotel treated you like family? Wouldn’t you want someone to be interested in your vacation and want you to enjoy your surroundings? Do you think the person behind the desk or the concierge at the big Hotels even know what day of the week it is? Or cares? When you’ve asked “is there a good restaurant nearby” did they bother to ask “What would you like to eat” or did they blurt out a few options with their locations? Did you feel like that person had given that answer to a dozen people before you? Whatever happened to thoughtful questioning to get to a result? How would it be if you asked the owner or innkeeper at the B&B that you’re staying and the reply was” You might like This Restaurant” “, here’s a menu” and “we ate their last week and it was great”? Did that person take a little more time with you? A little more engaged? A little more interested in you?

Why stay at a bed and breakfast?

Why not stay in a house that has some history, that has charm, that is lovingly looked after? Did you ever pass a B&B or country Inn and stay “I wonder what it looks like in there”? How many times have you come to Ocean City and passed the Atlantic House and say to yourself “Someday I’m going to peek in? What’s it like being in one of the few untouched authentic structures left in Ocean City, MD.?

Make a reservation with us and we’ll try to answer some of these rhetorical questions. But here’s a great question? How many question marks in this BLOG. Email us with your answer.

What it takes to be part of the Best Beach Patrol

Maria Drakos - Tuesday, June 07, 2016

Ocean City, Maryland plays host almost 8 million visitors that love the beach and ocean according to Kristin Joson contributing writer at “Ocean City Today” newspaper and Public Education Coordinator for the Ocean City Beach Patrol. She wrote a terrific article in the May 2 edition. According to the article OC hires over 200 Surf Rescue Technicians. Beach goers call them LifeGuards. Making the squad and training are grueling. To be under initial consideration, applicants must swim a quarter of a mile in the ocean from the jetty at the Inlet to the fishing pier, keeping their strokes through waves and currents, and must be back on shore in ten minutes or less. As soon as swimmers hit the beach, they must then run in the sand back to the starting point. For more information check out the Town of Ocean City’s web site. Fun for the whole family the show kicks off every Sunday at 9:30,10:00 and 10:30 pm beginning May 28. Just keep an eye out for a 2-story inflated ball on the beach at the end of N. Division St. Each time slot has a different theme with a different musical line. Monday and Tuesday every week beginning July and going till September the beach and boardwalk light up with a fireworks display that is second to none. If you want to get physical or you just want to watch other people get physical travel down the boards to 27th street for "Family beach Olympics" every Tuesday evening from 6:30 pm till 8:00pm. The fun starts June 14 and continues till August 2. Next are free concerts on the beach at the Caroline Street Stage which is behind the Comfort station. They begin Wednesday at 8:00 pm starting July 13th and continue till August 31. Every type of musical genre is represented from big band swing to rock, country, and reggae. More free music happens at "Sunset Park "on the bayside and South Division St. These concerts are Thursday evenings at 7pm starting the beginning of July. Monday's and Friday's are "Movies on the Beach". Just walk north along the boardwalk from our house to 27th street and you'll see the giant screen.

All these events are within walking distance of our bed and breakfast, but if you want to drive or take the bus uptown to North Side Park there are events up there also. Who doesn’t like free?

Maria Drakos - Friday, April 29, 2016

Tired of spending too much money on vacation. Ocean City Maryland has your back. We’ve got a multitude of things to do that are free, the number one freebie is our beach. Public access to ten miles of white sand beach, with temperate water and great waves. Groomed and cleaned every night and the best part is it’s guarded with the “Best Beach Patrol” on the east coast. I’ll have a BLOG on just our Life Guards in the future. OK so here’s the next best free thing to do in OCMD.

The BOARDWALK. Built in 1902 it is one of the best boardwalks in the USA. Walk, bike ride (time restricted) or ride the Tram along the two and three quarter mile Boardwalk. A real Boardwalk made of wood bordered on one side by the Atlantic Ocean and the opposite side by every type of glittering, flashy store that have everything to sell from live Hermit crabs in painted shells to lizards and frogs to every type of T-shirt imaginable.

Having trouble expressing your feelings for someone, or your political views or just what you want to do, look for the perfect T-shirt saying. If you are into fast food, the boardwalk has a tremendous selection of deep fried concoctions you could think of. A few of the shops hand out free samples. Check “The Wrapper”. As the sun goes down the boardwalk entertainers come out. All free (tips accepted). You can be entertained by magicians, jugglers, and a host of singer songwriters and other musical entertainers. The best part of the boardwalk is just to grab a seat on one of the benches and people watch. Thousands of people transverse the boardwalk daily from all walks of life it’s just fun to watch them go by.

Next week I’ll BLOG about more free things that the City of Ocean City sponsors. Also I promise to tell you about the FREE BEER MONEY.

Planning your Ocean City MD vacation

Maria Drakos - Thursday, March 17, 2016

As the weather gets warmer and our thoughts drift towards our summer vacation let me suggest some activities that are not necessary linked with the beach. Ocean City MD provides vacationers with a host of options that are within walking distance from the Atlantic House Bed and breakfast. Jet skiing rentals, para sailing, bay fishing trips on a head boat, ocean fishing on a deep sea charter, and three or four bicycle rental shops. There are three amazing golf courses within 15 miles. Of course you can just relax and lie on our beach, dig your feet into our warm clean Ocean City sand, ride a wave in the surf, watch for dolphins frolicking, or people watch at the water's edge. The boardwalk is another famous attraction that beckons people to walk it's two and three quarter mile length lined with snack shops, arcades, Trimper rides and amusements and of course great surf shops like Malibu. Josephine and I can direct you to the places that we feel are the best. The amazing thing about Ocean City Maryland is the amount of free activities that happen on the beach. Sunday nights the city presents a laser light show, Monday and Tuesday nights are firework displays, Wednesday are concerts on the ocean beach, and Thursday are concerts at Sunset Park on the bay side of the island. All are walkable from the Atlantic House Bed and Breakfast.

Now let me tell you about some great things to do off the island but still incredibly close. Our favorite is a "Moonlight Paddle” at Ayers Creek Adventures. Imagine you’re in a kayak on a pristine creek. The tranquil waters lapping up against the side of the boat as you glide through the marsh passing egrets, great blue herons and the occasional bald eagle. Watching the sun set over the marsh bathed in the silence that is a respite from the din of the crowds and arcades of the beach. This is far from the finally. As you turn your kayak to return you'll see the moon rising and within minutes you'll be enveloped in a shroud of darkness silhouetted by moonlight paddling on a ribbon of silver with menhaden and snappers jumping out of the water in front of you. Just breathtaking. As you return to the dock a bon fire will be waiting for you along with snacks and conversation with fellow adventures.P.S. your stay at the Atlantic House is discounted if you book any tour with them.

Another beautiful Maryland treasure is Assateague Island. Just twelve miles from The Atlantic House both the State park and the National Seashore boast some of the most beautiful ocean beaches on the east coast.Dunes protect the miles of trails and hammocks that shelter herds of wild ponies. The bay hiking trails offer a glimpse of nature at it’s very best .Loblolly pines ,holly and red cedar are the habitat for white tail and sika deer. The shallow tidal bays are perfect for looking for blue crabs. The ponies are of course the stars of the island . We can’t get enough photos of them . Just check out our gallery to see some of them.
